The fifth grade standards for Civics and Governance expand on students' knowledge of government structure at the state level to explore the ideas of separation of powers and checks and balances within the three branches of the federal government. Students will begin to look beyond their local and state governments to analyze how the federal government meets the needs of all citizens in the United States. Later, in sixth grade, students will go even further to make connections to other government structures worldwide. They will look at government structure throughout history and how it has changed, remained constant, and influenced the government structure of the United States.
